As a qualified YogaBirth teacher I offer a regular weekly yoga class for pregnant women. My approach is greatly influenced by the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli and while very simple, can have far-reaching effects. Using gravity, breathing and movement to improve structural alignment, it can reduce tension, release energy and prevent or relieve many of the discomforts that often accompany pregnancy. Previous experience of yoga is not necessary and this type of yoga will not present any difficulty to beginners. We focus on lengthening the spine, creating space, working with gravity and "being in the moment" and bringing awareness to our breath. We practice positions for labour, together with breathing exercises, visualization, and affirmations for birth, pelvic floor exercises and relaxation. We consider optimal foetal positioning (OFP) and lifestyle changes to encourage baby into a favourable position for birth. Women develop confidence in their body's ability to give birth, learn to focus on the breath, to allow their bodies to surrender to their labour and birth, to trust their bodies.
