Everything you need to know about induction in one place

Whether you're preparing for an upcoming induced birth or want to know how best to avoid one,  I've got everything you need to know in one place.

All About Me

Hello, I'm Rose, founder and instructor at Birth &  More where I teach Antenatal and Postnatal classes and support hundreds of mums and mums to be each year in Dorking, Surrey. I also support lots of couples virtually around the country.

I have seen a huge increase in the rate of induced births in recent years and am often asked how best to prepare for induction and how to ensure it is as positive an experience as possible.  I've also worked with mums-to-be on a 121 basis in the days leading up to their booked induction. It's this experience that's lead me to collating my resources to create a Digital Induction Toolkit.

It truly is the complete preparation for Induced Birth!

The Positive Induction Toolkit

This Toolkit is for you whether you’ve been recommended an induction and now you are trying to decide if it’s right for you, or you’ve already consented to an induction and want to better understand the process and get practical tips for a more positive experience. Or perhaps you are simply wanting to understand how best to avoid having one.

Most of the mums-to-be that I support want to avoid induction and have their babies in the birth centre.

Sounds far enough to me. But without the right preparation they can all too easily find themselves on the induction train.

The induction rate at my local hospital, East Surrey, is currently around 30 - 34% annually. And that's not even including the number of mums having labour started via a cervical sweep. Perhaps more scary is that the figure for birth centre births in 2024 was just 7%.

It's fair to say induced birth is common. But the thing you need to know about induction is - it's often not necessary.

Yes there are circumstances where it can justly be deemed medically necessary. But one of the most common reasons my expectant mums are being offered induction is for being past their due date. To be clear this does not automatically put you and your baby at risk if you've not got any other conditions or risk factors.

Only 5% of babies will be born on their due date with the rest arriving in the two weeks either side.

So how do you decide if it’s right for you?

I’ll share some practical decision making tools within the Toolkit. You should work through these with your birth partner and midwife and ask for the time you need to reflect on the decision.

If you then decide it is the right course of action, the Toolkit will guide you through ways and techniques to put yourself in the best possible position for a positive experience. This includes how to use Hypnobirthing and access to 4 dedicated Hypnobirthing tracks. Releasing fear around the experience is key so that your body doesn't resist the process.

The Toolkit will walk you through each step of the induction process and how long each stage could take, pain relief options, a packing list and Induced Birth Plan Template. I will outline how you can support the process so that is is more efficient and more comfortable.

This Toolkit will leave you feeling empowered and clear headed.

I truly believe that induced birth can be positive with the right preparation, even though it is a medicalised birth.
