Signs Your Nervous System May Be Asking for Support (and Gentle Ways to Respond)

There are times in pregnancy and new motherhood when you might sense that something feels ‘off’, even if you can’t quite put your finger on it. Learning a little about the nervous system, including the vagus nerve, can help you recognise these moments with more compassion and less self-judgement.

Rather than clear alarm bells, the nervous system often whispers.

Below are some common signs that your system may be feeling under pressure, followed by simple, gentle ways of offering support. These are not rules or instructions, just invitations to notice what resonates.

You might notice:

  • Feeling constantly tired but unable to properly rest or switch off

  • A sense of being on edge, anxious, or easily startled

  • Digestive changes such as bloating, nausea, constipation, or loss of appetite

  • Shallow breathing or a feeling of tightness in the chest or throat

  • Feeling tearful, irritable, or emotionally numb without a clear reason

  • Difficulty concentrating or feeling mentally foggy

  • A sense of disconnection from yourself, others, or even your baby

These experiences are common during times of big change and don’t mean you’re failing or doing anything wrong. Often, they reflect a nervous system that has been working hard for a long time.

Gentle ways of offering support for yourself:

  • Slowing your breath slightly, especially lengthening the exhale

  • Humming, singing softly, or listening to calming music

  • Wrapping yourself in warmth, a blanket, warm drink, or bath

  • Placing a hand on your chest or belly and noticing your breath for a moment

  • Spending a few minutes outside, gently taking in sounds and colours

  • Sharing how you feel with someone who listens without trying to fix it

  • Letting yourself rest without needing to justify it

Small moments like these can send quiet signals of safety through the vagus nerve and wider nervous system. Over time, they can help your body remember that it is allowed to pause.

Perhaps most importantly, supporting your nervous system isn’t about adding more to your day. It’s about noticing what helps you feel even a fraction more settled, and trusting that those moments matter.

In this season of life, kindness, especially towards yourself, is one of the most powerful forms of support there is.
